Affiliations

LHS Athletics is a member of the National Federation of State High School Associations, the Missouri State High School Activities Association and the St. Louis Suburban Public High School Athletic and Activities Association. Competition is governed by the rules and regulations of these organizations, with the exception of local rules, which may be adopted where necessary.

National Federation of State High School Associations

nfhsThe National Federation of State High School Associations (NFHS) is the national leader and advocate for high school athletics as well as fine and performing arts programs. It includes 51 member state associations and serves 19,500 high schools and more than 12 million young people. NFHS writes playing rules for high school sports and provides guidance on a multitude of national issues. It offers online education courses for high school coaches, officials, students, parents and speech and music leaders through the NFHS Learning Center, and showcase high school sports and performing arts online through the NFHS Network.

Ultimately, the goal of NFHS is to ensure that all students have an opportunity to enjoy healthy participation, achievement and good sportsmanship in education-based activities.

 

Missouri State High School Activities Association

The Missouri State High School Activities Association (MSHSAA) is a voluntary, nonprofit, educational association of secondary schools established for the purpose of working collaboratively to develop and adopt standards of supervision and administration to regulate the diverse interscholastic activities and contests which are delegated by the member schools to the jurisdiction of the association. The objectives of MSHSAA are to:

 
  • ensure that interscholastic activities shall supplement the curricular program of the school to provide opportunities for youth to acquire worthwhile knowledge, skills and emotional patterns
  • promote the educational values inherent in interscholastic activities which will contribute to the accepted aims of education
  • develop standards for the approval and direction of interscholastic activities and contests
  • formulate minimum uniform and equitable standards of eligibility that must be met by students to attain the privilege of representing their schools in interscholastic activities
  • develop standards to be met by schools participating in interscholastic activities under the sponsorship of the association
  • avoid interference with the educational program of the school and to prevent exploitation of high school youth and the programs of member schools by special interest groups
  • foster a cooperative spirit and good sportsmanship on the part of school representatives, school patrons, and students
  • provide means of evaluating and controlling local, state, and national contests affecting secondary schools initiated by firms, organizations, and institutions outside organized educational agencies
  • develop standards of officiating and adjudicating to ensure greater statewide consistency and quality

St. Louis Suburban Public High School Athletic and Activities Association

In 2018, the St. Louis Suburban Public High School Athletic and Activities Association (SLSPHSAAA) realigned its three conferences into various pools by sport. For purposes of athletic competition, pool assignments are based on several factors, including athletics offered, competitive balance, competitive trends, diversity and school enrollment.


The goals of SLSPHSAAA are to:
  • provide academic activities and athletics that support student understanding and application of the Missouri Learning Standards
  • promote diversity, sportsmanship, competitive balance, safety and skill development through appropriate competition
SLSPHSAAA supports these goals by:
  • promoting activities and scheduling that encourage improved student academic achievement
  • encouraging student participation in academic extracurricular activities and athletics
  • designing association activities, scheduling and conference structures that promote interaction of students from diverse socioeconomic, ethnic and racial backgrounds
  • promoting responsible citizenship and sportsmanship at all events
  • promoting a safe event environment, accommodating the needs of participants and spectators
  • encouraging and supporting district and school efforts to engage all students in academic and athletic opportunities in their school and community
  • recognizing individual and team accomplishments
SLSPHSAAA member schools include Affton, Clayton, Eureka, Fox, Hazelwood Central, Hazelwood East, Hazelwood West, Jennings, Kirkwood, Ladue, Lafayette, Lindbergh, Marquette, McCluer, McCluer North, McCluer STEAM, Mehlville, Normandy, Northwest, Oakville, Parkway Central, Parkway North, Parkway South, Parkway West, Pattonville, Ritenour, Riverview Gardens, Rockwood Summit, Seckman, University City and Webster Groves.
